ABOUT THE ARTIST

After receiving a BA in Art from the University of
Massachusetts at Amherst Michelle worked in Manhattan as an illustrator for educational publishers: American Book, Encyclopedia Britannica, Harcourt, Houghton Mifflin, Macmillan, McGraw Hill, Pearson, Prentice Hall, Random House, Scholastics and Silver Burdett. During this time she was also offered a songwriting contract with SESAC.

Since moving to Tucson Michelle has expanded her resume' to include art for American Diabetes Association (Native American logo), Arizona Light, Galen Press, Gaslight Theater,
KGUN 9 TV (courtroom art), Muscular Dystrophy Association
(TV Telethon), Tucson Weekly and University of AZ Press. In 1987 she was featured in The Encyclopedia of Living Artists and in July/August '06 Food and Life AZ featured her work.

In addition to book and magazine illustration Michelle's art includes caricatures, cartoons, ads, t-shirts (Harlequin Nature Graphics) and greeting cards (Michelle's Animal Anomalies). Her work has been purchased by Bob & Barbara Beaudry, Dino DeLaurentis (for his movie Leviathan), Jim Estes (collage of his life as builder & sportsman) and David Mehl (owner of Cottonwood Properties).

While living in an ashram in NY for three months, then in India for four months, Michelle painted murals on temple ceilings, was the artist on a Mobile Hospital Bus, and worked on backdrops for the epic plays Mahabharata and Ramayana.

Michelle's murals have graced fine AZ homes, restaurants &
hotels, schools & shops. These include Acoma Animal Clinic,
Casa Molina, Desert View High School, El Saguarito, Sheraton
El Conquistador and Souperb Choice (Tempe). In addition, she has worked on remodeling projects, such as the Fourth Ave
Co-op. This work included design, construction & installation of signs, lettering, awnings and stained glass, as well as tiling.

Although Michelle's specialty is oil portrait painting, she also paints & sculpts with mixed media. Her styles are equally diverse, ranging from surreal & whimsical to realistic & technical. Her art reflects her philosophy: "To me, the meaning of life lies in just that---meaning---smack-dab between the ridiculous & the sublime."
